Acoustic Slat Wall Panels

Acoustic Slat Wall Panels

Acoustic sound insulating slat wall panels in brief:

Acoustic slat wall panels are designed for sound insulation and noise quietening, but in a much more visually acceptable way than the pyramid foam sound insulation in recording studios.

The slats on these decorative insulation panels come in a variety of colours to help match the furniture and feel of your home, and the acoustic insulation panels are easy to install making them great for a DIY home improvement.

What is acoustic sound insulating wall panels made of:

Made with a felt backing that provides both sound and heat insulation, this gives the panels a large surface area that can be fixed to the walls very quickly and is east to cut and shape.

On top of the base are strips / slats of MDF slats with wood veneer, these are spaced regularly every 12mm to create a gap where sound will bounce (like the pyramid foams) and attenuate causing the deadening of the sound. This space also means pockets / strips of air stay relatively still in this void and creates good thermal insulation (it is the trapped air that makes double / triple glazing insulating). It has taken a lot of design effort to maximise the depth to width ratio on this void to provide the best results for both sounds and heat insulation.

Tools and materials required to install the acoustic wall panels.

Construction adhesive (such as Fix-All), screws / anchors (appropriate for your wall type), screwdriver, drill, measuring tape, spirit level, pencil, utility knife or saw, mastic gun.

How to install acoustic sound insulation wall panels.

  1. Panels installation is easier with two people, when positioning and pushing for adhesive to grab, but is possible on our own. Can a friend help?
  2. Ensure there is space to work in, you will need to have access to both sides of the acoustic panel at different stages of the installation.
  3. Preparation - Make sure the wall surface is clean, dry, and free of dust or debris so the adhesive can stick to the wall and not the dust.
  4. Measure the wall - Measure the area where you plan to install the panels to determine the layout and how many panels you will need.
  5. Mark the layout - Use a pencil and level to mark the placement of each panel on the wall. This will help you position the panels correctly.
  6. Measure the panel - Measure the panels and mark where they need to be cut.
  7. Cut the panels - Use a utility knife or saw to cut the panels to the desired size and shape for any wall sockets, light switches and other things. Be sure to cut on a stable surface and wear safety gear.
  8. Applying adhesive - Test the adhesive on a small section to make sure it holds well before proceeding with the entire installation. Apply a generous amount of adhesive to the back of the acoustic panel, evenly over a large surface area (not in one big lump),.
  9. Placing the panels - Carefully place the panel onto the wall according to your layout marks. Press the panel firmly against the wall to ensure good adhesion and hold it in place until the adhesive has grabbed sufficiently. Use a level frequently to ensure panels are straight. Wipe off any excess adhesive that may have squeezed out from behind the panels.
  10. Securing with screws / anchors (advisable but depends on your project)- Mark the locations where you will insert screws, aim for corners and the centre of the panel to secure evenly, make sure you do not hit any pipework or wires (may required a detector).
